Cat&#8217;s Back &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunday 07 August &#8211; Cat&#8217;s Back &#8230;<\/h1>\n\n\n<p>Thank you to David who acted as \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/fr\/brittany-gites-weekly-blog-24july2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guest blogger<\/a>\u2019 a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 We hoped you enjoyed his first post (but not so much as to want David to write the blog every week \u2026!)<\/p>\n<p>I am now back from a short trip to the UK, the timings of which were dictated by being here on our changeover Saturdays and especially, as Dave\u2019s blog mentioned, the day before I left which was the first ever when our guests in all four g\u00eetes changed on the same day. \u00a0It was also the first week that we had some home grown flowers that we could put in the\u00a0g\u00eetes as the hydrangeas and montbretia\u00a0had come into bloom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/First-Garden-Flowes-e1470584446138.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1836 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/First-Garden-Flowes-e1470584446138-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"First Garden Flowes\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 224px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 224\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday was much easier as there were only 2 g\u00eetes to turnaround and we are, including our Stable Chambre d\u2019H\u00f4te, full again this week.<\/p>\n<p>I apologise for not blogging last Sunday but, having got back on the overnight ferry the day before, there wasn\u2019t so much to update on what we had achieved in the course of the week as David was focussed on keeping ontop of the laundry, weeding and watering while giving his classes at New York Gym in Morlaix.<\/p>\n<p>Having been back I have picked up on a couple of our major projects.<\/p>\n<p>As we now have been granted our planning permission for a garage I needed to clear the space where it is to be built as we have found a builder who can do the work for us at not too outrageous a price and we hope he will visit next week to mark out the footings.<\/p>\n<p>The area is on the west of the garden which had become a useful, if fairly unsightly, service area for the bins and \u2018stuff\u2019 and up until now, has housed the existing wood \u2018shed\u2019 and where we place (dump) things that can live outside but have no proper home.\u00a0 The current wood shed has been built out of the slate found everywhere and, we understand, from some which came from a, long since demolished, stable which used to be behind the Granary g\u00eete.\u00a0 Thankfully it has been built in a dry way which means that I will easily be able to dismantle the walls and reuse the slate for a number of other projects we have on the list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Service-Area.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1842 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Service-Area-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"Service Area\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/142;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As David mentioned, I had started moving our fire wood from its original store to a temporary pile which I built before I left.\u00a0 I used sheets of old asbestos which were lying behind the old woodstore which initially gave it a nuclear bunker \/ Anderson shelter type appearance so I thought I would blend it more into the surroundings with some camo-net and now you can barely see it!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Nuclear-Bunker-Hidden.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1840 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Nuclear-Bunker-Hidden-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Nuclear Bunker Hidden\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/187;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With all the wood relocated I have started to take down the old store. \u00a0I have removed the tarpaulin and wood frame for the roof and dismantled the corrugated iron &#8216;lean-to&#8217; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/145;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have also got to the point now that we can start to do some work to our own house, Kergudon.\u00a0 As the focus previously needed to be on the g\u00eetes and getting them to a state that we were happy to have people stay, our own home had been neglected although needs a lot of work to get it how we would like it \u2013 again this will take a number of years I suspect.<\/p>\n<p>However, small things first and I finally managed to put a coat of paint on the outside of our \u2018back\u2019 door from the lounge.\u00a0 When we arrived at Kergudon it was evident that the previous owners never used this door and, as there is no gutter on the roof above it, the wood was soaked from the rain that would have been pouring on it for years and it had become very rotten at the base and could not be opened.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Kergudon-Back-Door-Outside-e1470584422743.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1838 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/kergudon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Kergudon-Back-Door-Outside-e1470584422743-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kergudon Back Door Outside\" width=\"199\" height=\"267\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 199px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 199\/267;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Much earlier this year we had someone repair the bottom of the door and make it good but we didn\u2019t find a dry period to paint it properly before other projects got prioritised despite having had some paint mixed in the UK in February last year!<\/p>\n<p>The reason we got paint mixed is that we want, eventually, to paint all of the exterior doors and windows a Breton colour.\u00a0 The tradition it seems is that, much like other parts of the world, Breton houses have their woodwork painted either blue or burgundy because, we are told, in the olden days Breton fishermen would paint their fishing boats blue or burgundy and any leftover paint was used on their houses.\u00a0 As we couldn\u2019t find a blue that we liked we had one mixed to be closest to what we have seen \u2013 it is perhaps a little more \u2018electric\u2019 than I remember from 17 months ago but will look good when they are all done the same way. \u00a0Next task is to install some guttering above the door to\u00a0delay its rotting in the future &#8211; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 203\/272;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally for this week we have also been out and bought a new washing machine for the house.\u00a0 Having lost patience with the company we had ordered one from online still not being able to tell us when they could deliver (a month after purchasing) we cancelled our order and went back to reliable Darty.\u00a0 Machine ordered and delivered within 48 hours \u2013 should have done that first and not tried to save a bit of money with an online store.\u00a0 Having had such a bad experience we thought we would leave feedback on the French Trustpilot site and only then did we see that we were far from unique and this particular company had nothing but terrible reviews \u2013 if only we\u2019d looked before.\u00a0 Lesson learned!<\/p>\n<p>I have followed\u00a0the pattern of\u00a0Dave&#8217;s title for his blog &#8211;
