Despite the drought and heat continuing, albeit less punishing than before, it has been a slightly more productive week than the previous few (could it have been any less??!)
I said in my last blog, that much of the work I want to be getting on with is fairly noisy so I am reluctant to do it when we have guests who want to relax and enjoy a peaceful summer holiday. However, last week’s guests spent as much time out and about as they did relaxing by the pool so I was able to take the opportunity to do a couple bits.
The first was to cut another of the hedges, this time the one between Grange and Streat al Louarn next to our rear gate. I planted this hedge when I created the new talus in about 2017 from tiny cuttings taken from the front hegde and it has thrived.
As the heat peaked again mid-week, we did have an afternoon at the beach on Tuesday and went to one of our favourites, Pentrez plage on the west coast. Pentrez is a beach we often recommend to guests as it is huge so, while it is extremely popular you never feel that it is crowded. There are a few cafes and tabacs behind the beach if you want refreshment, and, for reasons we can’t fully explain, the water is generally degrees warmer than the north coast beaches.
At the end of the week I was able to pick up the cladding on the pool house and started to create the framework that I will need to attach the planks. You will see that the frame doesn’t cover the entire wall, as I plan to create additional wood storage behind the building so we can eventually get rid of the unattractive poly tunnel we currently have in the corner of the garden.
Yesterday was our changeover day but, because we had some guests who had to leave early to make their ferry we were able to make an early start and so managed to finish at a reasonable time. This gave me the opportunity before our new guests arrived, to cut a second hedge this one closest to our house and Hayloft so would potentially be disturbing if there were guests sat on their terrace.
Gîtes changed yesterday we had our Sunday stroll today and walked west along the Nantes Brest canal from Chateauneuf to the lock at Kersalig. This was the last remaining section we had to walk to complete the entire length from Châteaulin to Châteauneuf du Faou and it has been beautiful all the way along – and perfect for the dogs to cool off when it has been particularly hot!
Next week’s work efforts will depend on whether our guests are pool or beach goers and if I can make more noise without disturbing too many people.
